Voting in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election is underway after a break of six and a half years. Balloting began at 8:00am on Tuesday and will continue until 4:00pm. A total of 471 candidates are contesting for 28 central posts, with the positions of Vice President (VP), General Secretary (GS), and Assistant General Secretary (AGS) drawing the most attention.
Students have also shown interest in knowing where the major candidates themselves are casting their votes. Polling is being held at eight centres across the campus, with 810 booths set up for voters.
VP candidates
BNP-backed Abidul Islam Khan of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall and Sadiq Kayem of the United Students’ Alliance, also from Bangabandhu Hall, are casting their votes at the Udayan School & College centre.
Umama Fatema of Independent Student Unity from Sufia Kamal Hall is voting at the Department of Geology centre. Abdul Kader, backed by BAGCHAS from Bijoy Ekattor Hall, and Bin Yamin Molla of Gono Odhikar Parishad’s “DUCSU for Change” panel from Sir AF Rahman Hall, are voting at the Senate Building centre.
Sheikh Tasnim Afroze Imi of the Left Alliance “Protirodh Parishad” from Shamsunnahar Hall is casting her vote at the University Laboratory School & College centre. Yasin Arafat of Islami Chhatra Andolon-backed from Bangabandhu Hall and Jamaluddin Muhammad Khalid from Kabi Jasimuddin Hall are voting at the Udayan School centre. Independent candidate Shamim Hossain of the English Department and Bijoy Ekattor Hall is casting his vote at the Senate Building centre.
GS candidates
BNP-backed Sheikh Tanvir Bari Hamim and SM Forhad of the United Students’ Alliance are casting their votes at the Udayan School centre. BAGCHAS-backed Abu Bakar Majumdar and Meghmallar Basu of the Left Alliance are voting at the Physical Education Centre.
Al Sadi Bhuiyan of Independent Student Unity is also voting at the Udayan School centre. Sabina Yasmin of Gono Odhikar Parishad is casting her vote at the TSC centre, while Islami Chhatra Andolon-backed Khayrul Ahsan Marzan is voting at the Physical Education Centre. Independent candidates Ashiqur Rahman and Arafat Chowdhury are both casting their votes at the Udayan School centre.
In this year’s DUCSU election, 39,874 students are eligible to vote, including 18,959 female and 20,915 male voters. Each voter will cast ballots for 28 central positions as well as 13 hall-level positions.
