Two people have been killed in a powerful explosion at the US Steel Clairton plant, the largest coking operation in North America, located about 15 miles south of Pittsburgh.
Local officials said the second body was recovered on Monday evening after search operations at the site, following the earlier confirmation of the death of 39-year-old Timothy Quinn, a father of three from Westmoreland County. The second victim has not yet been identified.
The blast, which destroyed part of the plant, injured 10 others, five of them critically.
The explosion triggered a fire and an air pollution alert for residents within a one-mile radius, which was lifted later the same day.
Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the explosion. US Steel CEO David B Burritt said the company is cooperating with investigators.
The facility, employing around 1,300 people, has a history of environmental violations, and has faced millions of dollars in fines in recent years.
