The present government has completely failed to bring the country’s law and order situation under control, leaving ordinary citizens in extreme insecurity across every sector, according to National Citizen Party (NCP) President and Chief Whip of the Opposition, Nahid Islam.
Taking responsibility for these failures, he demanded the immediate resignations of Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and the energy minister.
He made these remarks before media personnel during a press briefing held at the Dinajpur District Shilpakala Academy Auditorium at 11am on Thursday.
Addressing the news conference, Nahid alleged that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has created an unstable situation across the nation through widespread repression. He further said that the party has utterly failed to adopt an independent foreign policy.
Expressing grave concern over the economic situation and the unrestrained prices of daily essentials, the NCP leader noted that the prices of basic commodities, including gas and electricity, are continuously rising, and the market system is not under the BNP’s control.
Drawing a comparison between the actions of the current government and the previous administration, the NCP president asserted that the BNP has failed to honour a single promise made before the election.
He said that much like the fascist Awami League government, the BNP did not even permit funeral prayers (janaza) to be held for protesting workers, while police are carrying out door-to-door torture and oppression against workers.
During the briefing, Nahid declared the NCP’s full solidarity with all legitimate demands of the ongoing labour movement, announcing that the party will remain vocal on the streets to secure the rights and demands of the public.
Earlier, he addressed a regional coordination meeting entitled “Organisational Progress Review and Local Election-Centric Planning Formulation” as the chief guest, organised by the Dinajpur District National Citizen Party.
The meeting was attended by NCP Senior Joint Member Secretary Sarjis Alam, Kurigram-2 Member of Parliament Atiqur Rahman Mujahid, as well as the president and general secretaries of the Dinajpur District NCP.
