At least 15 people were injured and 15 residential houses vandalised when two rival groups of villagers clashed over establishing local dominance in Saltha Upazila of Faridpur on Wednesday afternoon.
The violence occurred at around 4:30pm in Meherdia village under Gatti Union of the upazila.
Valuables from several houses were also looted during the unrest.
According to police and local residents, a long-standing feud over local dominance had been brewing between the supporters of Kalam Munshi and Nur Islam Munshi.
On Wednesday noon, when Kalam Munshi was installing a fence around his farmland, members of the rival faction physically assaulted him.
Following the attack, a violent confrontation erupted later in the afternoon between the supporters of Kalam Munshi on one side and those of Nur Islam Munshi and Ansar Matubbar on the other.
Armed with traditional weapons including shields, spears, and brickbats, both factions engaged in chases and counter-chases for nearly an hour.
During the hour-long clash, rioters vandalised 15 residential homes and ransacked several houses for belongings.
On receiving information, a team from Saltha Police Station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Attempts to reach Kalam Munshi and Nur Islam Munshi for comment were unsuccessful.
Saltha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Bablur Rahman Khan confirmed that police quickly dispatched forces to the scene to calm the situation.
He noted that the clash originated over erecting a fence on Kalam Munshi’s agricultural land, adding that legal action would be taken regarding the incident.
