After more than three decades in Bengali cinema, Prosenjit Chatterjee has become one of Tollywood’s most recognisable stars.
Often hailed as the ‘industry’, he has played a wide range of characters and helped bring renewed energy to Bengali film box offices during a crucial period.
While he rarely discusses his private life, the actor recently offered a glimpse into his marriage to actress Arpita Chatterjee.
In an interview with a news outlet, Prosenjit spoke warmly about his wife and jokingly recalled his previous marriages.
The actor said he particularly respected Arpita for standing by him through the years.
“I respect Arpita Chatterjee, my wife, for one particular reason: she has put up with me and stayed with me for so long. Many wives have left me, but she has not! She has tolerated me. I love and deeply respect Arpita. She is also a very good actress,” he said.
Prosenjit has been married three times. His first marriage was to actress Debashree Roy in 1992. Both were established performers at the time, but differences reportedly emerged over their expectations of married life.
Prosenjit wanted Debashree to take on a more traditional domestic role, and the marriage ended after around three years.
He later married Aparna Guha Thakurta, who came from a business family. The couple have a daughter, Prerna. Their relationship also ended in divorce in 2002.
Later that year, Prosenjit married actress Arpita Chatterjee, with whom he has a son, Mishuk. The couple have now been together for more than two decades.
Although rumours about their relationship have surfaced at different times, Prosenjit’s recent comments offered a rare public expression of his affection and gratitude towards Arpita.
His remarks also reflected how his earlier experiences have shaped his appreciation of his present marriage. Despite the ups and downs of his personal life, the actor made it clear that he continues to value the love, understanding and companionship he shares with his wife.
