Melbourne Renegades have announced a special seating section at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) for Bangladeshi supporters to celebrate Mustafizur Rahman’s arrival ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season.

The section, named ‘The Fizz Bay‘, will give fans of the Bangladesh pacer a dedicated place to gather and support him during his first season in Australia’s premier T20 competition.

Renegades general manager Max Abbott announced the initiative during a virtual press conference on Wednesday, November 4, when the franchise officially confirmed Mustafizur’s signing.

The club will dedicate at least one entire seating bay at the MCG to Mustafizur’s supporters. It will also offer a 50 percent discount on the first 200 family ticket spots to encourage more families to attend.

“And we’re also, as part of that, to celebrate, going to be launching a dedicated bay at the MCG, which will be the Bay of Fizz, or the Fizz Bay, I should say,” Abbott said.

“And the first 200 spots in that bay, we’re going to do it 50% off for families as well to really encourage the family to come together.”

The franchise could expand the section if demand exceeds expectations.

Abbott said the initiative would allow Bangladeshis living in Melbourne to come together and celebrate one of their country’s biggest cricket stars.

“We know he’s going to have a lot of fans here in Melbourne. And I think it provides a really nice opportunity to bring the Bangladesh community together through our shared love of cricket,” he said.

The general manager also encouraged fans to bring their national flags, wear Bangladesh or Renegades jerseys and create a lively atmosphere at the MCG.

He believes Mustafizur’s popularity will attract considerable support from the Bangladeshi community in Australia.

Abbott also expects the pacer to receive strong backing when the Renegades travel to Sydney, another city with a large Bangladeshi population.

Having previously worked with the International Cricket Council at several World Cups, Abbott praised the passion of Bangladesh cricket supporters.

“I know that there’s no fans like the Bangladesh fans. They ride the highs and lows of every game like no other fans around the world,” he said.

Mustafizur’s arrival has already generated considerable interest among Bangladeshi supporters.

Abbott revealed that the franchise had noticed a rise in social media activity even before the official announcement, following reports last week that the pacer was set to join the club.

“I think we’ve already seen across our social media channels a big spike in interest. And, you know, we expect that to continue,” he said.

The Renegades hope Mustafizur’s popularity will help attract new supporters to the club and increase attendance at their home matches.

However, Abbott clarified that the franchise’s main reason for signing the Bangladesh pacer was his cricketing ability.

“First and foremost, we make our overseas signings for the cricket. So we want our main ambition is to win games of cricket and to prepare the best squad we possibly can. And Mustafiz has fit into those plans,” he said.

The club sees the additional support from Bangladeshi fans as a major benefit.

Mustafizur is expected to join the Renegades after completing his ILT20 commitments. The franchise is preparing for his availability from December 22, when they face Sydney Sixers.

With the Fizz Bay initiative, the Renegades hope to turn Mustafizur’s maiden BBL season into a special occasion for Bangladeshi cricket supporters in Australia.
