Police have sought another seven-day remand for Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dwip after completing his four-day remand in a case filed over the murder of former Air Force officer KM Tahsif Souri.

Investigators said further interrogation is necessary for several reasons, including uncovering the circumstances of the killing, identifying the crime scene, recovering evidence and arresting other suspects.

Firoz Uddin, inspector of the Tongi River Police Outpost and the investigation officer in the case, submitted the remand prayer to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka on Tuesday.

State prosecutor Mohammad Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the matter.

Inspector Firoz said further remand is needed to verify Dwip’s movements by showing him CCTV footage collected from different locations and analysing his presence at those sites. Investigators also want to determine where he went and whom he contacted during the 15 to 20 minutes he was away while at Nest Bar and Restaurant with Tahsif.

Police said they need to collect and analyse the call detail records (CDRs) of Tahsif, Dwip and other individuals linked to the case. The petition also states that further questioning is necessary to establish the circumstances surrounding the murder and uncover the motive behind it.

According to the petition, investigators are seeking additional time to identify and arrest other unnamed accused and recover evidence related to the case. Police also want to gather more information regarding the motive behind Tahsif’s death and determine where and how the murder was committed.

Information Obtained During Initial Remand

According to the remand application, Dwip told investigators that he called Tahsif out of his residence at around 6pm on 27 October.

Later, Tahsif, Dwip, 23, and another suspect, Jerika Tasnim Disha, 19, visited several locations together. At one stage, Disha returned home.

Dwip reportedly told investigators that he and Tahsif reached the Mazar Basti area of Tongi around 12:40am on 28 October and then walked through the settlement to a field beside the Turag River.

The accused said that the two separated after noticing several people in the field.

Investigation officer Firoz said that Dwip provided a number of important leads during questioning, which are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation. However, the officer also alleged that Dip avoided answering several questions and remained silent on certain issues.

The petition states that, before the death, Tahsif had been seen travelling to different locations and visiting restaurants with Dwip and Disha.

Based on information gathered so far, police believe Dwip and Disha were the last two people known to have been with Tahsif before his death. Investigators said it is therefore necessary to examine whether they had any involvement in the killing.

Inspector Firoz further said that Dwip could evade law enforcement or influence the investigation if released on bail.
