A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking directives to restructure the Dhaka District and Sessions Judge Court and the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court into two separate judicial regions named North and South.
Supreme Court lawyer Salahuddin Regan filed the petition on Monday and disclosed the matter on Tuesday.
Earlier on 17 September, Advocate Regan sent a legal notice to the law minister, the Law and Justice Division secretary, and the Supreme Court registrar general, requesting necessary administrative, legal, and judicial steps in this regard.
He moved the High Court after receiving no response to the notice.
According to the petitioner, the existing judicial structure needs to be reorganised due to Dhaka’s massive population, extensive geographical area, and the increasing pressure of civil, criminal, family, special, and metropolitan criminal cases.
He added that under the present arrangement, alongside a vast number of cases and justice seekers, the presence of lawyers, witnesses, accused persons, and related individuals creates immense pressure on the judicial administration.
This situation is adversely affecting litigants’ travel to court, case management, and the speedy disposal of trials.
Considering these circumstances, the writ petition seeks directives to take necessary measures for establishing or restructuring the Dhaka North District and Sessions Judge Court and Dhaka North Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court, as well as establishing or restructuring the Dhaka South District and Sessions Judge Court and Dhaka South Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court.
