Afghanistan have reached their highest position in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings after moving up to sixth place, overtaking Sri Lanka.
The achievement marks another major step in Afghanistan’s rise in international cricket since making their ODI debut in 2009.
Afghanistan have enjoyed several memorable results in recent years. They defeated Pakistan and Sri Lanka during the 2023 ODI World Cup and reached the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup for the first time.
Their recent performances have helped them move ahead of established cricketing nations, including Bangladesh, England, West Indies and now Sri Lanka.
Afghanistan have won 96 of their 191 ODI matches, with a win-loss ratio of 1.09.
They recently completed a 4-0 ODI series victory over Ireland away from home. They also remained unbeaten in the tri-nation series against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in the UAE, finishing as champions.
Afghanistan continued their strong form with a clean sweep of Zimbabwe in the recent T20I series.
The two teams will now meet in a two-match Test series as Afghanistan look to carry their momentum into the longest format.
Their rise in the rankings reflects their growing success against stronger opponents and their progress across international cricket.
