A Dhaka court has granted two more days of remand for Diamond World owner Dilip Kumar Agarwala in a case filed over the alleged attempted murder of student A Jabbar during the July uprising.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Zakir Hossain passed the order on Sunday, state prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed.

Earlier, investigation officer Md Sumon Mia sought a seven-day remand for Agarwala in the case filed with Uttara West Police Station.

In the remand application, the investigation officer said Agarwala had provided important information during four days of interrogation but withheld other significant details. The information he provided was being verified, the application said.

Further interrogation was necessary to uncover the circumstances of the incident, recover the weapon used and arrest other accused, the investigator said, seeking seven more days of remand.

Agarwala had previously spent a total of five days in remand in two separate cases. The latest order marks his third round of remand.

On Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque granted four days of remand in the attempted murder case after the investigation officer sought 10 days.

The earlier remand application stated that Agarwala, 57, was a member of the Awami League’s central subcommittee on industry and commerce and had been a candidate for the Chuadanga-1 parliamentary constituency.

It also claimed that evidence suggested Agarwala had been physically present at the scene with other accused and had participated in the incident. The investigator sought his remand to establish the facts of the case, identify and arrest other suspects, collect their names and addresses, and recover the weapons allegedly used.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) arrested Agarwala from a residence in Banani on 19 October.

The following day, a court granted him one day remand in a money laundering case involving alleged smuggling worth Tk678.19 crore.

After the remand ended, the same court ordered him sent to jail on Wednesday.

According to the complaint in the attempted murder case, Jabbar was shot on 5 August 2024, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in front of BNS Centre under Uttara West Police Station. He remained in hospital until 26 September 2024.

After his condition improved somewhat, he filed the case on 27 March 2025, naming former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 49 others, along with 100 to 150 unidentified people.

Agarwala was previously arrested by the then Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on 3 September 2024, over allegations of gold and diamond smuggling, fraud, forgery and money laundering, following the fall of the Awami League government.

RAB took him into custody after a lengthy operation around Diamond World’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka, late that night.

He was subsequently shown arrested in a case over the killing of a teenager, Hridoy Ahmed, in Badda during the July quota reform movement. Police also interrogated him on remand in that case before he was later released on bail by a court.
