Afghanistan’s 158-run victory over Zimbabwe has improved Bangladesh’s prospects of reaching the final of the ODI tri-series in Abu Dhabi, after Rashid Khan’s four-wicket haul helped dismantle the Zimbabwean chase on Monday.

Zimbabwe, who had beaten Bangladesh by 99 runs in their opening match, needed a positive result against Afghanistan to strengthen their position. Instead, they were bowled out for 136 in 38.4 overs while chasing 295, suffering a heavy defeat that leaves Bangladesh with a clearer route into contention.

Afghanistan made 294 before being dismissed in 50 overs after winning the toss and choosing to bat. Sediqullah Atal struck 102 off 110 balls, while Ibrahim Zadran contributed 90 from 96 deliveries.

Afghanistan lost Rahmanullah Gurbaz for 25, but Zadran and Atal took control with a 140-run partnership for the second wicket. Zadran hit nine fours and two sixes before falling for 90, while Atal went on to complete a century featuring eight fours and a six.

Hashmatullah Shahidi added 28 as Afghanistan built a competitive total. Zimbabwe’s bowlers prevented the innings from extending further, but the target proved well beyond their reach.

Zimbabwe’s reply quickly unravelled. They slipped to 43-4 before captain Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl attempted to rebuild the innings.

Raza and Burl added 64 from 112 balls, taking Zimbabwe past 100 and briefly offering hope of a recovery. Rashid broke the stand by trapping Burl lbw for 31 off 63 balls.

He then bowled Raza for 48, leaving Zimbabwe with little chance of chasing down the target. Rashid finished with four wickets for 17 runs from eight overs, while Fazalhaq Farooqi claimed two for 15.

Zimbabwe were eventually dismissed for 136, losing by 158 runs.

The result matters for Bangladesh, who have one group match remaining against Afghanistan on Wednesday. A victory would strengthen their bid to reach the final, with the top two teams progressing. Zimbabwe’s defeat has eased the pressure on Bangladesh, although the final standings will depend on the remaining result and the teams’ net run rates.
