An assistant teacher of a government primary school has been arrested in Nageshwari Upazila of Kurigram district for allegedly attempting to rape a Class Five student inside a school toilet.
The arrested teacher, identified as Abdul Motaleb, is an assistant teacher at Dakshin Ramkhana Government Primary School. He is from the Dakshin Ramkhana Bhuiyatari area under Ramkhana Union of the upazila.
According to local sources, the incident occurred on Monday during the school’s tiffin break. The class five student had gone to the toilet, where Motaleb allegedly found her alone and attempted to rape her. Following a physical struggle, the student managed to escape and reported the matter to a female teacher in the school office.
As news of the incident spread, tension mounted among the local residents. To hush up the matter, the school’s Headmaster, Nur Islam Mia, and a local leader, Kazi Mosharraf Hossain, negotiated until midnight. They also prevented local journalists from gathering information regarding the incident.
Upon receiving the information, police intervened at midnight, detained the accused teacher, and rescued the victim.
On Tuesday afternoon, the victim’s father filed a formal case with the police as the plaintiff.
Nageshwari Police Station Acting Officer-in-Charge (OC) Enamul Haque Pradhan said that the arrested teacher was sent to court on Tuesday afternoon, while the victim remains in police custody.
