The government has fixed the price of surplus electricity generated from battery-backed rooftop solar systems and supplied to the national grid at Tk10.50 per unit under the net metering framework, as part of efforts to expand renewable energy use.
The Power Division issued a notification on Tuesday, setting the price based on current market rates and bids received by the division for rooftop solar power projects.
According to the notification, the maximum generation cost for battery-backed rooftop solar electricity has been estimated at Tk8 per unit. The government added a 20 per cent profit margin and an 11.25 per cent premium to set the final price at Tk10.50 per unit for electricity supplied to the grid.
Customers who can install rooftop solar systems at a cost lower than the estimated generation cost will be able to retain the savings as their benefit, the notification said.
Under the Net Metering Guideline, 2025, customers who install rooftop solar systems by February 28, 2027, and supply surplus electricity to the national grid after meeting their own consumption needs, will receive Tk10.50 per unit for the supplied electricity for three years, until February 28, 2030.
Electricity distribution companies will maintain customer records, measure the amount of electricity supplied to the grid and keep details of payments. The additional amount will be transferred to customers’ bank accounts or mobile financial accounts and will not be paid in cash.
The special pricing arrangement will not apply to rooftop solar systems installed after February 28, 2027, according to the notification.
The government also said solar panels, batteries, inverters, meters and other equipment used in the systems must meet technical standards set by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA).
Customers will receive policy support through the Power Division’s one-stop service centre and district and upazila-level offices of electricity distribution companies.
The notification came into effect on September 1, 2026.
