A case has been filed against against 14 individuals, including officials of the July Shaheed Smrity Foundation, on charges of fraud, misappropriation of funds, assault, attempted murder and extortion.
July fighter Md Gias Uddin, 48, filed the application before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam’s court on Tuesday, the plaintiff’s lawyer Md Yasin Miah confirmed.
Among the accused are Senior Verification Officer Iftekhar Hossain, Executive Member Sabrina Afroz Srabonti, Saidur Rahman Shahid, Mehedi Hasan Prince, Sagar, Afzalu Rahman Sayem, Harun-or-Rashid, Kamrul Hossain, Alif, Zahid, Momenuzzaman Dipu, Sajjad Mostafa, Fatema Afrin Payel and Yasin Molla.
In the complaint, Gias Uddin said he had contacted the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation to receive a Tk3 lakh cheque promised to him as a July warrior. After failing to receive the cheque, he went to the NCP office at Banglamotor and informed the foundation’s General Secretary Sarjis Alam, July movement leader Hasnat Abdullah, Tasnim Zara and Snigdha about the matter. They advised him to visit the foundation office to collect the cheque.
Gias Uddin alleged that when he went to the foundation office on 3 May last year to collect the cheque, the accused demanded Tk1.5 lakh, half of the cheque amount. The complaint stated that after he refused to pay the money, he was taken to a secret room and assaulted.
According to the complaint, Mehedi Hasan Prince and Sagar held Gias Uddin’s hands while Shahid and Sayem punched and kicked him. At one stage, he was pushed against a wall, causing his head to hit a rod, leaving him unconscious. He alleged that after regaining consciousness, he found blood coming from his body.
Gias Uddin further alleged that when he cried out and protested, Shahid, Sayem and Kamrul assaulted him again and attempted to force him out of the foundation office. Later, Harun and Kamrul left him near the foundation’s lift. His son later took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he received primary treatment.
The complainant claimed that after the incident, he went to the police station to file a case, but police refused to register it and delayed the process in various ways. He later approached the court after being advised to seek legal action through judicial channels.
