An expatriate youth has been hacked and injured in the capital’s Mohammadpur area over a love triangle, with police identifying an extramarital affair as the motive behind the attack. Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Jewel Rana of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mohammadpur Zone disclosed these details during a press conference at Mohammadpur Police Station on Friday.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Shanto and Billal, alias Kala Billal. Billal was apprehended during a police raid conducted late on Thursday night.
Following the violent assault, the victim’s father filed a case at Mohammadpur Police Station.
The case explicitly names the ringleader of a local juvenile gang and three of its members: Munna alias Captain Munna, Russel alias Anda Russel, Billal alias Kala Billal, and Garkata Saiful. Several other unidentified individuals have also been accused in the lawsuit.
According to ADC Jewel Rana, the hacking occurred in Mohammadpur area. Following the complaint filed by the victim’s family, the police launched an operation and have arrested two members of the juvenile gang so far.
A tangled backstory
Investigating officers revealed that the roots of the assault trace back to a complex love triangle.
A few years ago, the victim, Lashkar Hridoy, married a woman named Hafsa Akter. Following their marriage, Hafsa became romantically involved with Captain Munna, a local youth gang leader. Hafsa subsequently eloped with Captain Munna and married him.
Three years after this elopement, Lashkar Hridoy left Bangladesh for Saudi Arabia. However, Hridoy and Hafsa maintained a secret relationship.
Once Hridoy was in Saudi Arabia, Captain Munna phoned him and warned him to stop communicating with Hafsa. Despite the warnings, Hafsa continued to contact Hridoy on a regular basis.
ADC Rana said even after Munna had eloped with and married Hafsa, her extramarital relationship with her former husband, Hridoy, persisted. Munna repeatedly issued threats to Hridoy over the phone, but the pair maintained their relationship.
Recently, Hridoy returned to Bangladesh on leave. On receiving news of his return, Captain Munna summoned Hridoy before hacking and critically injuring him.
The attack took place just three days after Hridoy arrived back in the country. He is currently hospitalised and undergoing medical treatment for his injuries.
