Police have recovered four bodies from different coastal areas of Cox’s Bazar within two days, with the latest being the decomposed body of an unidentified man found at Sugandha Point on Thursday night.
The body was recovered around 10:45pm after local residents spotted it being washed ashore during high tide.
Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Mohammad Ali said the body was in an advanced state of decomposition, making immediate identification difficult.
“The body is emitting a foul smell, and in some places the flesh has separated from the bones,” he said.
Although the facial features were no longer recognisable, police identified the deceased as a man based on his physical structure and clothing. Investigators believe he may have died at least a week ago.
The latest recovery came a day after three other bodies were found along the district’s coastline.
On Wednesday morning, two half-decomposed bodies of unidentified women were recovered — one from the sea near Saint Martin’s Island and another from Shahpori Island in Teknaf.
Later that afternoon, another woman’s body was found on the Rajarchhara coast under Sadar Union.
The bodies of the three women and the man have been sent to the Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
Although the identities of the deceased are yet to be confirmed, local residents suspect the deaths could be linked to the ongoing conflict in neighbouring Myanmar.
Police said they are investigating the matter to identify the victims and determine the circumstances behind their deaths.
