France have moved above Argentina to become the new number one team in the latest FIFA World Ranking ahead of the World Cup quarterfinals.
Didier Deschamps’ side climbed to the top after reaching the last eight of the tournament. Argentina dropped to second, while Spain slipped to third. England stayed in fourth place.
Argentina have won all five of their World Cup matches. But that was not enough to keep them at the top of the rankings.
Morocco also continued their rise. The Atlas Lions moved up to sixth and are now just one point behind fifth placed Brazil.
Brazil dropped points after their 2-1 defeat to Norway in the round of 16. Morocco will now face France in the quarterfinals in Boston.
Spain fell one place after their goalless draw against Cape Verde in the group stage. However, they stayed in the top three after beating Portugal 1-0 in the round of 16.
Portugal slipped two places to seventh after their exit from the World Cup.
Belgium climbed to eighth after their 4-1 win over the United States. They will now meet Spain in the quarterfinals.
Norway made the biggest jump in the rankings. They climbed 12 places to 19th after an impressive World Cup campaign.
The Norwegians shocked Brazil in the round of 16. Erling Haaland has scored seven goals in four matches and is among the top contenders for the Golden Boot.
Norway will now face England in the quarterfinals.
England kept their fourth place after beating co hosts Mexico 3-2 in the round of 16. Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham have scored 10 of England’s 11 goals in the tournament.
Argentina remain unbeaten despite losing the top spot in the rankings. They came from behind to beat Egypt 3-2 in the round of 16 and will now face Switzerland.
Switzerland also climbed in the rankings. They moved up five places to 14th after beating Colombia in a penalty shootout. Murat Yakin’s side are now close to returning to the world’s top 10 for the first time in seven years.
