A seemingly ordinary shanty in a Bede (nomadic) colony, built on government Khas land in Bhimpur village under Ward No-4 of Chatkhil Municipality, has been revealed as a luxurious drug den equipped with modern technology.
While the exterior remains concealed behind traditional bamboo and thatched roofing, the interior boasts a regal lifestyle featuring modern air conditioning (AC). To evade detection, the premises are surrounded by sophisticated CCTV cameras used to monitor the movements of both law enforcement and customers.
Residents allege that the syndicate is spearheaded by a woman identified as Bobita Akhter Sumaiya, 35. According to police records, Sumaiya has been arrested at least six times with yaba in connection with seven drug cases.
However, she reportedly resumes her illegal trade immediately after securing bail each time.
Investigations indicate that the “drug queen” adapts her political affiliations to suit the prevailing climate. Having previously operated under the protection of local Awami League leaders, she is now accused of running her syndicate by using the names of influential BNP leaders.
Expressing grave concern, BK Hanif, joint convener of Chatkhil Municipality BNP, said police, journalists, and locals alike feel helpless against the dealer. He noted that the group brandishes domestic weapons whenever they sense the presence of police or outsiders. “The source of Bobita’s power must be identified, and those providing her with background support must be uprooted,” Hanif added.
An anonymous source observed that people of all ages frequent the spot to purchase and consume drugs, leaving the local community living in fear. The drug trade is reportedly pushing the students and youth of Chatkhil towards destruction.
Abdul Monnaf, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chatkhil Police Station, confirmed that Sumaiya faces multiple drug charges and was recently detained. He admitted, however, that the authorities were unaware of her high-tech and luxurious living arrangements.
Aggrieved residents have issued a strong demand for the administration to evict the illegal establishment and bring the “godfathers” behind the syndicate to justice.
