Hundreds of young climate activists gathered at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital on Friday, demanding a phase-out of fossil fuels and a transition towards renewable energy.
The demonstration was organised as part of the Global Climate Strike under the slogan “No Future Without Nature”, ActionAid Bangladesh said in a press release on Friday.
The programme brought together youth representatives from 30 organisations across the country and eight global youth hubs alongside ActionAid Bangladesh.
Participants called for an immediate reduction in fossil fuel dependency and urged policymakers to ensure a just transition towards renewable energy.
As part of the protest, activists displayed a giant structure made from discarded plastic to symbolise the environmental impact of plastic pollution and fossil fuels.
Demonstrators also staged symbolic performances highlighting health risks linked to fossil fuel use before holding a rally along Manik Mia Avenue.
Similar programmes were also held in 27 districts, including Chattogram, Khulna, Barishal and Sylhet.
Climate activist Nipa Saha said emissions from fossil fuels are making the air increasingly toxic and warned that dependence on coal and oil must be reduced to prevent worsening environmental damage.
Another activist, Imran Ahmed Emon, stressed the need to ensure women’s leadership and participation in climate action, saying women are among the worst affected by climate change.
ActionAid Bangladesh Youth, Resilience and Climate Justice Team Lead Md Nazmul Ahsan said increased investment in renewable energy is essential to ensure environmental sustainability and energy access.
The Global Climate Strike is observed worldwide each year under the “Fund Our Future” campaign.
