Police have arrested Faisal Matubbar, 25, a banned Chhatra League leader, for publicly attacking participants in the anti-discrimination student movement.
He was taken into custody by Madaripur Sadar police on Sunday afternoon.
Faisal faces multiple cases, including charges related to the killing of Roman Bepari and Tawhid Sannamat during the movement, obstructing police duties, and violations under the anti-terrorism law.
He had previously been arrested but resumed prohibited activities after securing bail, leading to his re-arrest.
Faisal, the son of Zainal Matubbar, hails from Ghatokchar area in Kandua Union of Madaripur.
He has long been active in Chhatra League politics. Earlier, images and videos circulated on social media showing his involvement in activities as a follower of former Awami League minister Shajahan Khan.
Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge of Madaripur Sadar police station, said “Faisal was arrested from his local area and produced before the Madaripur court on Sunday afternoon, which sent him to jail.”
He confirmed that Faisal faces several cases, including as an accused under the anti-terrorism law.
He has been shown as arrested in few anti-terrorism cases including some nonbailable ones.
In 2024, videos and photographs emerged on social media showing Faisal attacking students with weapons in front of Mostofapur and the Youth Development premises during the anti-discrimination movement.
