Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is currently in India to meet his mother, according to multiple sources from Indian security agencies and senior Awami League leaders based in India, as reported by BBC Bangla.

Joy arrived in India on June 6, the day before Eid-ul-Adha, and spent the holiday with Sheikh Hasina. Party insiders say the visit is primarily familial, although political discussions may have taken place.

This marks the first meeting between mother and son since Sheikh Hasina’s removal from power during the mass uprising in July-August 2024.

Awami League leaders noted that Joy, who resides in the United States, had held a Bangladeshi passport until it was revoked by the interim government. He recently received a U.S. passport, shortly after obtaining a green card.

His India visit was being discussed for weeks, but the actual trip was moved forward, according to Indian sources. Upon arrival in Delhi, Joy was taken under tight but discreet security to the undisclosed location where Sheikh Hasina is currently staying.

Party sources confirm that Sheikh Rehana, Hasina’s sister, was also present.

Awami League leaders say Joy has not met any other senior party figures during this trip.

Since her arrival in India on August 5, 2024, aboard a Bangladesh Air Force aircraft, Sheikh Hasina has remained under high security with limited movement. Initially housed at Hindon Airbase near Ghaziabad, she was later relocated to a secret address in or near Delhi. A senior Indian home ministry official told BBC Bangla that all efforts are being made to minimise her movements and in-person meetings, though they have not been entirely halted.

Joy is not expected to remain in India for long or to participate in active party affairs. Though there were earlier reports he might travel to Kolkata to meet exiled party affiliates and loyalists, Indian intelligence sources say that plan is no longer under consideration. He is likely to return soon after spending a few days with his mother.
