Three months after the murder of Md Jobayed Hossain, a student and Chhatra Dal leader at Jagannath University, the investigation remains incomplete, with the victim’s family expressing frustration over police negligence and delays.
Police say the probe is stalled due to pending forensic reports from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Investigation officer Mohammad Ashraf told Times of Bangladesh that “the forensic report has not arrived yet. Nothing new has emerged beyond what was found earlier.”
He added that he recently visited the CID forensic office and was informed that they were dealing with a heavy workload. “I have personally followed up and also contacted the head office. They assured me the reports would be delivered soon,” he said.
Jobayed’s elder brother, Enayet Hossain Shaikat, said the murder was premeditated and expressed anger at the slow pace of the investigation. “Three months have passed, but there is no progress. We demand a speedy and transparent investigation and justice for my brother,” he said.
Meanwhile, Giasuddin, father of accused Barjis Shabnam Borsha, said his daughter has been detained for three months without a charge sheet. “She did not commit the murder. She has been falsely implicated and kept behind bars in the name of investigation,” he said.
The plaintiff’s lawyer, Ishtiaq Hossain Jipu, confirmed that they have formally requested prompt and transparent submission of the investigation report, but noted no visible progress.
DMP Chawkbazar Zone Assistant Commissioner Mahfuza Rahman said the forensic process involves 10 to 12 different reports, of which two to three have been completed, though none have reached the investigators yet. “We are repeatedly urging the forensic department to send the reports,” she said.
Jobayed was killed on 19 October last year while visiting Borsha’s residence in Armanitola, Old Dhaka, for private tutoring. According to police, following initial interrogation, the murder was planned by Borsha and carried out by her longtime boyfriend, Md Mahir Rahman, with the help of Fardin Ahmed Aylan.
Police alleged that Jobayed was stabbed by Mahir and, while trying to escape, ran upstairs seeking help. They said Jobayed rang doorbells on the second floor but received no response, and in his final moments pleaded with Borsha on the third floor to save him. Police claimed Borsha left the scene after ensuring his death.
Police also stated that Jobayed, 25, and Borsha, 19, were in a romantic relationship, while Borsha was simultaneously involved with Mahir. According to police, Mahir discovered the relationship on 25 September, after which the trio allegedly planned the murder. Mahir and Aylan allegedly purchased knives, and on 19 October, Borsha called Jobayed to her residence, where the attack took place.
However, Jobayed’s family, fellow students, and teachers strongly rejected the “love triangle” narrative, demanding an impartial investigation and punishment of the real perpetrators.
Jobayed was a 2019–20 academic session student of the Statistics Department and an organising member of the university’s Chhatra Dal unit. On the day of the incident, around 4:45 pm, he was attacked while climbing the stairs to the third floor of the building, leaving blood stains from the ground floor up to the third floor.
Following the incident, Jobayed’s brother filed a case with Bangshal Police Station against Borsha, Mahir, Aylan, and four to five unidentified persons. Police arrested three of the accused, including Borsha and Mahir.
