Starting June 3, United Airlines passengers flying domestically without checked baggage will need to check in earlier than before. The airline is moving its check-in deadline for most U.S. flights to 45 minutes before departure, shortening the window by 15 minutes for travelers with carry-on bags only.
The new rule matches the existing deadline for passengers who are checking luggage. A United spokesperson said the change aims to create a more consistent process for all travelers and better align with industry standards.
Although most passengers use online check-in up to 24 hours before their flight, the cut-off remains important. It officially confirms a passenger’s intent to travel and allows the airline to finalize boarding and seating arrangements. Boarding passes are issued only after check-in is completed.
United’s update follows a broader trend across the airline industry. Many U.S. and international carriers have tightened check-in and boarding timelines to reduce delays and improve efficiency, especially as travel demand has surged post-pandemic.
Check-in deadlines vary between airlines and routes. For example, Emirates closes online check-in 90 minutes before departure, while Ryanair allows airport check-in up to 40 minutes before takeoff — but charges a fee.
The updated policy brings United closer in line with competitors like American Airlines and Delta, which also require passengers to check in at least 45 minutes before domestic departures.
Travelers are advised to check specific policies before flying, as requirements may still differ based on airport and destination.
