For the villagers of Chandai, a traditional boat race is more than a sporting event. It is a symbol of heritage, emotion and collective pride passed down through generations.
To preserve that tradition, every family in Chandai village of Atgharia Upazila in Pabna has voluntarily contributed money to build an 82-cubit racing boat named ‘Chandai Janata Express’.
The boat is being constructed at an estimated cost of Tk15 lakh and is expected to be completed within a month. It will take part in traditional boat racing competitions across the country.
During a visit to Chandai village, a group of skilled craftsmen was seen working from morning till evening at an open space where the massive wooden structure is taking shape. A canopy has been set up to protect the workers and the boat from rain and sunlight.
The craftsmen are cutting, shaping and joining pieces of wood to build the boat’s structure. Shal, garjan, teak and chapalish wood are being used, with careful attention given to ensuring speed, balance and durability.
All timber used for the boat has been collected from Gazipur. Iron nails, bolts, special adhesives and waterproof coatings are being used to increase its strength.
Craftsmen said the construction of large racing boats requires high-quality wood, precise balance and years of experience, as even a minor flaw can affect speed and control during competitions.
Chief craftsman Sukumar Chandra Sutradhar said he learnt the profession from his father, who had been involved in boat-making for nearly eight decades.
“I have been making boats for the past 55 years and have built around 150 racing boats so far. This year, after completing work on six boats, I am now building Chandai Janata Express,” he said.
He said the boat would be 82 cubits long, with 15 cubits at each end and a 67-cubit middle section. Each piece of wood is being placed with great care, while workers’ wages for a month will cost around Tk2.5 lakh. “Building a racing boat is not just a profession; it is an art. It requires experience, patience and technical skill,” he added.
The boat’s chief rower Abu Sayeed Molla, 60, said he had been involved in boat racing since 1980 and had participated in competitions in different parts of the country, including Hadol, Hatgram, Gorori and Dhaka.
“We have won championships and finished runners-up in several competitions. We hope to participate in major races with Chandai Janata Express as well,” he said.
“Our goal is not only to win but also to preserve Chandai village’s heritage and spread the name of Atgharia across the country,” he added.
Boat racer Rashid Munshi said the tradition of boat racing had existed in Chandai since the time of their ancestors.
“People from every family in the village are contributing to build this boat. We want future generations to continue this tradition,” he said.
Abdul Mannan, a member of the boat management committee, said the boat represents the unity, culture and pride of Chandai village.
“Chandai Janata Express is being built with voluntary donations from every family. We believe it will bring further recognition to Atgharia and Pabna through competitions across the country,” he said.
Another committee member Asadul Member said no individual or organisation was funding the project.
“Every family has contributed according to their ability. That is why the word ‘Janata’ has been included in the boat’s name. It represents the collective effort of Chandai’s people,” he said.
Sports enthusiast Mohsin Ali said boats from the village had previously taken part in traditional races in Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh, winning championships and other honours.
Villagers said boat racing was not merely entertainment but an important part of Bengal’s folk heritage. They are also encouraging young people to become involved so the tradition continues through future generations.
Once construction is completed, Chandai Janata Express will be launched for trial runs before taking part in traditional boat racing competitions across the country.
Residents hope the new boat will continue the village’s winning legacy and bring further recognition to Atgharia and Pabna.
