At least 50 people, including men and women, were injured in a clash over a small debt in Lakhai Upazila, Habiganj, on Monday afternoon.
The incident took place in Someshwar village of Muriauk Union.
Additional Superintendent of Police of Habiganj Sadar Circle, Shahidul Haque Munshi confirmed the matter.
The injured were rushed to the upazila health complex and Habiganj district modern hospital for treatment.
Lakhai police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.
Local sources said the dispute began when Rosom Ali purchased goods on credit from Jalal Mia’s shop. A disagreement erupted when the shopkeeper asked for payment. Jalal Mia claimed Rosom Ali owed him 185 taka, while Rosom Ali insisted he only owed 30 taka.
The argument quickly escalated as relatives and supporters of both sides joined in. Both groups eventually resorted to local weapons, leading to a violent confrontation with chasing and fighting.
Additional Superintendent Shahidul Haque Munshi, said the clash was triggered by a disagreement over the debt. He added that the situation has now stabilised and additional police have been deployed in the area to maintain peace.
