At least 30 students from six primary schools in Madaripur Sadar Upazila fell sick after eating government-provided school meals on Wednesday afternoon, with six admitted to the district hospital.
The incident occurred in various areas, including Khoazpur Union, at schools such as Pokrarchar Government Primary School, Rajarchar Government Primary School, Houshdi Government Primary School, and Kordi Government Primary School.
Under the government feeding programme, students were given bread and eggs. Shortly after eating, many began showing symptoms including stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
Pokrarchar Government Primary School head teacher Meherun Chowdhury said six students from her school were receiving treatment at the hospital for stomach pain. “The students have said that the problems started after eating the bread. However, I have learned that they are now somewhat stable,” she said.
Sharif Mohammad Maruf Hossain, Primary Education Officer of Madaripur Sadar Upazila, said until the afternoon, they had received information from five schools where students fell sick after eating expired bread and eggs.
“Six students from one school are undergoing treatment at the district hospital. The matter has been reported to higher authorities,” he said, adding that the food suppliers had been warned before but did not take it seriously.
