The government has appointed 25 individuals as additional judges to the High Court Division of the Supreme Court for a term of two years.
A notification regarding the appointments was issued on Monday night by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, signed by Secretary Sheikh Abu Taher.
According to the notification, the appointments have been made by the President of Bangladesh in consultation with the Chief Justice, under Article 98 of the Constitution and pursuant to Article 95(1). The appointments will be effective from the date the judges take their oath of office.
Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed is scheduled to administer the oath to the newly appointed judges tomorrow (Tuesday).
The newly appointed additional judges to the High Court Division include Md. Anwarul Islam Shaheen, an advocate of the Supreme Court, and Md. Saiful Islam, who was serving as Additional Secretary in the Law and Justice Division and a Senior District Judge. Also appointed is Nurul Islam, District and Sessions Judge of Chattogram, and Sheikh Abu Taher, the current Law Secretary and a Senior District and Sessions Judge, who notably signed the appointment notification himself.
Joining them are Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan, the Registrar General of the Supreme Court; Rajiuddin Ahmed, Faisal Hasan Arif, Md. Asif Hasan, Md. Ziaul Haque, Fatema Anwar, Abdur Rahman, Syed Hasan Zubair, and Urmi Rahman—all advocates of the Supreme Court.
Other appointees include S. M. Saiful Islam, Joint Secretary at the Law and Justice Division; Dihidar Masum Kabir, Jesmin Ara Begum, Murad-e-Mowla Sohel, and Md. Zakir Hossain, all senior judges or judicial officers from across the country.
From the Office of the Attorney General, Deputy Attorneys General Md. Monjur Alam, Md. Lutfar Rahman, Md. Rezaul Karim, Mahmud Hasan, A. F. M. Saiful Karim, and S. M. Iftekhar Uddin Mahmud have also been appointed.
Md. Rafizul Islam, Solicitor of the Law and Justice Division, has been included as well, completing the list of 25 new judges who are set to take their oaths before the Chief Justice on Tuesday.
