A Dhaka court has placed two central leaders of the banned student organisation Chhatra League on remand in separate cases.
On Monday, Metropolitan Magistrates Md Saifuzzaman and Sarah Farzana Haque granted one day’s remand each for Organising Secretary of the organisation Siam Rahman and Publicity Secretary Tarikul Islam Tarek. Siam was remanded in an attempted murder case filed with Shahbagh Police Station, while Tarek was remanded in a murder case filed with Paltan Police Station.
The information was confirmed by Additional Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon.
Court sources said both accused were produced before the court in the afternoon. Police sought seven days’ remand for Siam and five days for Tarek. State counsel Sumon supported the plea, while defence lawyer Farzana Yasmin Rakhi opposed the remand and appealed for bail. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail petitions and granted one-day remand in each case.
According to case documents, the murder case dates back to December 7, 2022, when Detective Branch (DB) police raided the BNP’s Nayapaltan central office ahead of the party’s one-point movement. During the raid, clashes broke out, and BNP activist Mokbul Hossain was shot dead. On September 30 last year, a case was filed by Mahfuzur Rahman, naming former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 256 others as accused.
The attempted murder case stems from a September 27, 2022 incident, when newly appointed leaders of Dhaka University’s Chhatra Dal were attacked near Nilkhet Police Outpost while heading to meet the vice-chancellor. Former DU Chhatra Dal general secretary Ariful Islam filed the case on September 30 the following year.
