Two children died after being electrocuted while bathing in a pond following a football match in Ashuganj upazila of Brahmanbaria on Sunday evening.
The incident occurred in the pond in front of the Bahadurpur Khandakar Islamia Hafizia Madrasa and Orphanage under Bahadurpur union.
The deceased were identified as Chan Badsha, 8, son of Saudi expatriate Alam Mia from the Chartala Mahrampara area, and Riyan Niyaj, 12, son of Nasim Mia from Niyaj Bari in Talshahar Dakshinpara.
Both victims were students of the Bahadurpur Khandakar Islamia Hafizia Madrasa and Orphanage.
According to police and locals, a group of children went to bathe in the pond after playing football in the field adjacent to the madrasa.
The two children were critically injured when they came into contact with a torn live electric wire lying in the pond.
They were quickly rescued and rushed to Ashuganj Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician declared them dead.
Another child was reportedly injured while attempting to rescue the two victims. The child has been admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital, though their identity could not be immediately confirmed.
Abu Hena Md Mostafa Reza, inspector (Investigation) of Ashuganj Police Station, said the incident is under investigation.
