In a remarkable display of power-hitting and composure, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi etched his name into cricketing history on Monday, becoming the youngest man ever to score a T20 century. Aged just 14 years and 32 days, Suryavanshi shattered the previous record held by Vijay Zol, who was 18 years and 118 days old when he struck 109 against Mumbai in 2013.
Suryavanshi’s extraordinary innings came off just 35 balls against the Gujarat Titans (GT), making it the second-fastest century in IPL history. Only Chris Gayle’s legendary 30-ball ton for Pune Warriors in 2013 was faster. The young prodigy’s knock also set the record for the quickest century by an Indian in the IPL, eclipsing Yusuf Pathan’s 37-ball hundred against the Mumbai Indians in 2010 — a record which had also stood as Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) fastest until now.
RR chased down GT’s daunting 210-run target in just 15.5 overs, setting a new benchmark for the fastest successful chase of 200 or more in all men’s T20 cricket. Previously, Surrey, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Pakistan had shared the record with chases completed in 16 overs.
An astonishing 93.06% of Suryavanshi’s 101-run innings came through boundaries — 94 runs in fours and sixes — the highest proportion ever recorded during a century in men’s T20s. The previous best was 92.45% by Abhishek Sharma, who struck an unbeaten 106 against Meghalaya in 2024.
Suryavanshi also became the youngest male cricketer to record a fifty-plus score in T20s, surpassing the previous mark set by Hassan Eisakhil, son of Mohammad Nabi, who had scored a half-century aged 15 years and 360 days in 2022.
His 166-run opening stand with Yashasvi Jaiswal was another record-breaking effort, marking the highest partnership for any wicket for Rajasthan Royals in IPL history. The previous best was 155, achieved by Jos Buttler and Devdutt Padikkal against Delhi Capitals in 2022.
During his whirlwind knock, Suryavanshi smashed 11 sixes, equalling the record for the most by an Indian in an IPL innings, alongside M. Vijay, who achieved the feat with a 127-run innings against RR in 2010. He also surpassed Sanju Samson’s record for the most sixes in an IPL innings for RR; Samson had struck ten maximums against RCB in 2018.
Rajasthan Royals also recorded their highest-ever powerplay total, racking up 87 runs without losing a wicket. Their previous best had been 85 for 1 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2023.
The successful pursuit of 210 was the highest total ever chased against Gujarat Titans and marked RR’s fourth successful chase of a 210-plus target in the IPL — the most by any team. Mumbai Indians, Lucknow Super Giants, and SRH each have three such chases to their name. In the wider T20 landscape, only Middlesex have matched RR’s tally of four 210-plus chases.
Adding to the carnage, Suryavanshi took a heavy toll on Karim Janat, who was making his IPL debut. In Janat’s first over, the 10th of the innings, Suryavanshi plundered 30 runs — the most ever conceded by a bowler in their maiden over in IPL history. The previous record was 25 runs, leaked by Varun Chakravarthy.
With a performance that will be remembered for years, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has announced himself to the world, heralding a new dawn not just for Rajasthan Royals, but for Indian cricket.
