At least 10 people were injured in sporadic clashes between activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, Chhatra Dal and police personnel at Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) in Gazipur.
The incident took place on Sunday morning over the appointment of a new vice‑chancellor, with Shibir and Chhatra Dal leaders repeatedly confronting each other.
Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Taherul Haque Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner Robiul, Sadar Police Station Officer-in-charge (investigation) Mehedi, and several of Chhatra Dal leaders were among the injured people.
Witnesses and DUET students said the government recently appointed Prof Mohammad Iqbal of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology as DUET’s new VC. Shibir activists opposed the move and already clashed with Chhatra Dal on Thursday night.
Around 10am, when Prof Iqbal arrived to take charge, former VC Zainal Abedin, Registrar Abu Taiyeb, DUET Teachers’ Association President Khosru Mia, and General Secretary Kazi Rafiq allegedly incited the Shibir men.
Under the leadership of DUET Shibir President Abdul Ahad and General Secretary Tasnim, the Shibir men gathered with over 300 outsiders at the main gate, locked it, and tried to block entry.
As police tried to break the gate and escort the new VC inside, Shibir supporters hurled bricks, prompting police to fire several rounds of tear gas.
Repeated clashes spread tension across the DUET campus and nearby areas, leaving locals fearful.
