Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus will address the nation at 8:20 pm this evening on the occasion of July Uprising Day, a speech that will be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV), BTV News, and Bangladesh Betar, according to the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.

In a symbolic gesture, Yunus is also scheduled to read out the July Proclamation at 5:00 pm from the South Plaza of the Parliament complex, marking the first anniversary of the student-led uprising that resulted in the downfall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.

August 5, 2025, marks one year since the dramatic collapse of the Awami League government, which was toppled by a bloody, student-led mass uprising.

On this day in 2024, Sheikh Hasina, after ruling Bangladesh for 15 and a half years, fled to India to escape the mounting public outrage over the deaths of hundreds of students and citizens during the quota reform protests.

Following Hasina’s resignation, the interim government, led by Yunus, was formed on August 8, 2024, just three days after the fall of the Awami League regime. Initially, the July Declaration and Yunus’s national address were scheduled for August 5 and August 8, respectively. However, the Chief Adviser later decided to combine both events on August 5 to symbolically commemorate the anniversary of the regime’s collapse.

In his address, Yunus is expected to highlight the achievements of the interim government over the past year, including progress in the justice process for the July 2024 massacre and advancements in critical governance reforms. Additionally, Yunus is anticipated to provide a roadmap for the future of Bangladesh, including the announcement of the tentative timeline for the national parliamentary election in 2026.

Meanwhile, in a symbolic move, Yunus is also scheduled to read out the July Proclamation at 5:00 pm from the South Plaza of the Parliament complex, marking the first anniversary of the student-led uprising that led to the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.
