BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the meeting between Chief Adviser (CA) Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman could be a turning point in overcoming the current political crisis in Bangladesh.
He said that Tarique Rahman will meet Muhammad Yunus, who is now in the UK on a four-day official visit. Fakhrul told a press conference at BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office in Dhaka on Tuesday.
The meeting will be held on June 13 between 9 am to 11 am (London time) at the Hotel Dorchester where the Chief Adviser is staying, he said.
Noting that chief adviser invited Tarique Rahman, Fakhrul said the meeting can play a positive role in the political crises that Bangladesh is facing.
“There is a lot of potential for creating a new dimension. Now it will depend on our leaders (Muhammad Yunus-Tarique Rahman) how they will take that possibility forward’ he said.
We have given full authority to the acting chairman on behalf of our party, we pray for his success,” said the BNP Secretary General.
Regarding the meeting with the Chief Adviser, the BNP Secretary General said, “This was discussed a few days ago, when we decided that the Chief Adviser would go to London, since our party’s acting chairman is there, a meeting could be held there. This possibility started from then. Now it has been confirmed.”
He said a meeting of the party’s standing committee was held Monday night with Tarique Rahman in the chair.
The upcoming meeting is expected to cover key political developments, including discussions surrounding the interim government’s role in the ongoing political process.
Earlier, the Chief Adviser left Dhaka for London on Monday evening for a four-day official visit to the United Kingdom.
An Emirates Airlines flight carrying the Muhammad Yunus and his delegation left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for London at 7:30pm.
He is expected to meet with King Charles III and hold bilateral talks with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
The chief adviser is also anticipated to meet with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, other senior ministers, political leaders, and prominent business figures during his visit.
During his visit, Yunus is expected to hold courtesy meetings with the Secretaries-General of the Commonwealth and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), where he will highlight Bangladesh’s broader international engagements.
As part of his public diplomacy efforts, he will deliver a special address at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) on June 11.
The Chief Adviser is scheduled to return home on June 14.
