Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus is set to announce a tentative timeline for the upcoming national elections in a highly anticipated televised address to the nation this evening.

A senior government source confirmed that the Chief Advser will outline key aspects of the interim administration’s achievements over the past year, including significant progress in delivering justice for the July 2024 massacre and advancing essential governance reforms.

An official from the Chief Adviser’s office said that the speech, scheduled to air at 8:00 pm, will also include policy directions for the coming months, and references to the consensus-building efforts led by the National Consensus Commission.

Meanwhile, in a symbolic move, Yunus is also scheduled to read out the July Proclamation at 5:00 pm from the South Plaza of the Parliament complex, marking the first anniversary of the student-led uprising that led to the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.

August 5, 2025, marks one year since the dramatic downfall of the Awami League government, toppled by a bloody mass uprising led by students.

On this day in 2024, after ruling for 15 and a half years, Sheikh Hasina fled to India to escape the growing public outrage over the deaths of hundreds of students and citizens during the quota reform protests.

Following Hasina’s resignation, the interim government led by Yunus was formed on August 8, 2024, just three days after the fall of the Awami League regime. Initially, the July Declaration and Yunus’s national address were scheduled for August 5 and August 8, respectively. However, the Chief Adviser later decided to combine both events on August 5 to commemorate the anniversary of the regime’s collapse.
