A youth was reportedly stabbed to death in front of the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Fazle Rabbi Sumon, 25, of Bhola Sadar Upazila. Sumon worked at a hardware shop and lives with his family in a rented house at Pabna House Goli in Mohammadpur.
Wife of the deceased, Monjuma Akter, said Sumon had gone to the Memorial with his friends. when a man named Munna stabbed Sumon with sharp weapon and snatched away his mobile phone at around 12pm.
Sumon was first taken to Sikder Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Later, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared him dead at around 3pm, she added.
DMCH Police Outpost in-charge Inspector Md Faruk confirmed the death and said that Sumon had a stab injury in his right thigh.
The body has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy, Inspector Faruk said.
Mohammadpur Police Station Inspector (Operations) Abdul Aleem confirmed the incident, adding, “Munna and Sumon were acquaintances. They used to move around the Mohammadpur area together. Both of them have previous cases in the police station. The police are working to find out the details.”
