A young man has been arrested while attempting to extort money by falsely identifying himself as a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Law enforcement sources confirmed that the arrest took place during the act of extortion, where the suspect Tariqul Islam, was allegedly collecting toll from a goods truck in Parbatipur upazila under Dinajpur district misusing the party’s name.

Parbatipur Model Police Station OC Abdullah-Al-Mamun said army personnel detained the toll collector on Thursday night and handed him over to police the same night following the filing of a case against him.

Tariqul Islam (40), is the son of late Mahmudul Sarkar from Paschim Rajabashor village in the upazila.

OC Abdullah Al Mamun stated, “The abandoned materials from the Barapukuria coal mine were awarded to Sena Kalyan Sangstha through a tender. On Thursday evening, two trucks were being used to transport the materials from the coal mine to their designated destination.”

He continued, “Around 8 PM, Tariqul, along with a group of 30 to 35 people, intercepted the two trucks. They demanded extortion money from the truck operators and attempted to divert the vehicles to another route.”

Upon receiving the report, members of the Barapukuria Coal Mine Army Camp conducted an immediate operation and arrested Tariqul on the spot.
