A 31-year-old man was hacked to death in the capital’s Banani area early Thursday.
The victim, identified as Rahat Hossain Rabbi, had no notable occupation and lived with his wife and family in their own house in Mohakhali’s Hazari Bari area, according to his brother-in-law Md Delwar Hossain.
Police said Rabbi went to a restaurant on Road 11, Banani, with two friends on Wednesday night. At around 4:30am, while leaving the restaurant, six to seven assailants attacked him with sharp weapons before fleeing the scene.
Severely injured, Rabbi was rescued by friends and locals and taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Banani Police Station Sub-Inspector Amjad Hossain said Rabbi sustained injuries to his left thigh and right elbow. Preliminary findings suggest the attack took place as he was coming down the stairs from the second floor of house number 100 on Road 11.
The body has been sent to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy. Police said a photo of one of the attackers, reportedly from Mohammadpur, has been recovered.
The motive behind the killing remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
