A 28-year-old youth who suffered severe burn injuries in a transformer explosion in Gandaria died on Friday afternoon while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
Resident surgeon Dr Sultan Mahmud Shikdar said the victim, Mejbah Uddin, succumbed to his injuries around 1pm after sustaining burns all over his body.
His father, Moslem Uddin, 65, with burns on 90 percent of his body, and his mother, Salma Begum, 50, with 55 percent burns, are still receiving treatment at the institute.
The explosion occurred around 2am on Friday when an electricity transformer next to their house burst, triggering a fire that spread to the second floor where the family lived.
Relatives said all three were critically injured in the fire and were rescued in the morning before being rushed to the burn institute.
