A High Court lawyer on Sunday filed a writ petition seeking the immediate formation of an expert committee to review the “controversial and conflicting sections” in the report of the Women’s Affairs Reform Commission.

Moving the petition in the “public interest”, the lawyer also urged the court to impose a temporary ban on the implementation of the commission’s recommendations unless the issue is resolved through court directives, according to High Court sources.

The petition, filed by High Court lawyer Rawshan Ali,  seeks the immediate cancellation of recommendation numbers three, four, six, ten, eleven, and twelve of the commission.

It states that these recommendations are not only contradictory to the “spirit of Islam”, but also hurt the sentiments of the general public. They are also said to be in conflict with the constitutional provisions of the country, it added.

This writ has been filed shortly after two religion-based political parties raised demands for the dissolution of the Women’s Affairs Reform Commission’s recent report submitted to the interim government.

Hefazat-e-Islam, at a public rally on Saturday, announced a 12-point declaration which includes the dissolution of the Women’s Affairs Reform Commission and the cancellation of its report.

Hefazat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Mahfuzul Haque read out the declaration at a massive rally at the city’s Suhrawardy Udyan.

On the same day, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman stated at a party conference at the Al Falah auditorium in Moghbazar that some recommendations of the Women’s Affairs Commission are “in conflict with Islamic law”.

“The holy Quranic texts are not changeable,” he added.
