A court has fined a woman named Rupa Akter Tk3,000 for filing a false dowry case. For defaulting on the payment, she was sentenced to one month in prison.
On Monday, Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Junaid issued the order. At the time, Rupa apologised and paid the fine. Earlier, on April 30, the court acquitted the accused in the case, police constable Shagor Mia.
At the same time, the constable’s former wife and plaintiff in the case, Rupa Akter, was issued a show-cause notice. She was asked to explain in writing by May 12 why she should not be fined Tk3,000 and sentenced to six months of imprisonment. She submitted a written explanation to the court.
However, her explanation was deemed unsatisfactory, and the court sentenced the plaintiff under Section 250 of the Criminal Procedure Code to the maximum fine of Tk3,000 and a month’s imprisonment.
According to the case details, Rupa Akter and police constable Shagor Mia were married on July 9, 2023, with a dowry of Tk4 lakh, in addition a golden chain and ring given to Shagor. However, Rupa was never taken to her in-laws’ residence.
A few days later, it was alleged, Shagor allegedly began demanding a dowry of Tk15 lakh. Upon refusal, Rupa was subjected to physical and mental abuse.
