Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who was removed from power in the July uprising, is currently in India on a family visit. While there were plans for him to meet with party leaders and activists residing in Kolkata during this trip, it now appears unlikely to materialise.

Joy arrived in India from the United States on June 6 to celebrate Eid with his mother and has remained there since, according to a BBC Bangla report.

Initial reports suggested Joy might visit Kolkata, where many top Awami League leaders, former ministers, MPs, and party-affiliated businessmen who fled Bangladesh – along with former police officials and lawyers – are currently residing. However, this anticipated meeting now seems improbable.

Citing Indian security sources, the report indicated Joy’s visit is more familial than political. Originally scheduled for several months later after obtaining a US passport – for which India’s Foreign Ministry had given preliminary clearance – the trip was unexpectedly moved forward to June 6.

Unlike typical VVIP protocol involving pilot cars and military-clad security escorts, Joy’s airport transfer was conducted discreetly though under tight security.

Joy’s sister Saima Wazed Putul is based in Delhi for work, enabling their family Eid reunion. While his exact return date to the US remains unconfirmed, sources suggest he does not plan an extended stay in India and may return within days.
