England wrapped up a T20 series win over the West Indies with a match to spare, chasing down a testing target of 197 to claim a four-wicket victory in the second international at Bristol on Sunday.
Former white-ball captain Jos Buttler led the way with a composed 47, while current skipper Harry Brook added 34 as England reached 112 for 2 inside 13 overs, seemingly cruising towards victory. However, the loss of both batsmen in consecutive overs swung the momentum back in the visitors’ favour, with England still needing 85 runs.
But the setback only paved the way for two of England’s newer faces to seize the moment. Jacob Bethell produced a blistering cameo, smashing 26 off just 10 deliveries – including three sixes – to swing the game back England’s way. He was ably supported by Tom Banton, who held his nerve to finish unbeaten on 30 and guide the hosts home with nine balls to spare.
Earlier, the West Indies had recovered from a poor start to post 196 for 6. Luke Wood made the perfect start for England, trapping Evin Lewis lbw with the very first ball of the match. But captain Shai Hope (49) and Johnson Charles (47) rebuilt effectively with a 90-run partnership.
With the scoreboard reading 121 for 4 after 16 overs, it was Rovman Powell (34 off 15) and former skipper Jason Holder (29 off nine) who provided the late fireworks, propelling the visitors to a competitive total with 75 runs in the final four overs.
England’s bowling attack came under pressure in those closing stages. Adil Rashid, tasked with the penultimate over, was uncharacteristically expensive, leaking 31 runs and finishing with figures of 1 for 59 – his most costly return in T20 internationals.
Nevertheless, England’s batting depth and composure ensured they claimed the win and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, which concludes on Tuesday in Southampton.
