Dunith Wellalage, who rushed back home from the United Arab Emirates after the sudden passing of his father, is set to rejoin the Sri Lankan squad. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed that Wellalage will be available for selection in the upcoming Super Four match against Bangladesh in the UAE.

In Sri Lanka’s final group stage match against Afghanistan, Wellalage bowled four overs, conceding 49 runs and taking one wicket. His final over proved costly, going for 32 runs, including five sixes from Mohammad Nabi. Afghanistan, batting first, posted 169 runs.

Sri Lanka responded with a composed chase, winning by six wickets with eight balls to spare. The victory not only secured Sri Lanka’s spot in the Super Four but also ensured Bangladesh’s progression.

Tragically, Wellalage received the news of his father Suranga Wellalage’s passing due to a heart attack in Colombo during the match. The joy of reaching the Super Four quickly turned to grief for the fast bowler.

Wellalage returned home on the morning of 19 September to attend his father’s funeral and say his final goodbyes. He is now ready to rejoin the team and is expected to report to the Sri Lankan camp in the UAE on 20 September. The Super Four clash between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka is scheduled to start at 8:30 PM Bangladesh time.
