Netflix’s latest Top 10 rankings, from September 8 to 14, were dominated by boxing, supernatural drama and a record-breaking K-pop fantasy adventure.
The long-awaited ‘Canelo Álvarez vs. Terence Crawford’ fight led the English-language TV chart with 17.7 million views despite airing only on Saturday night. According to Netflix, the live event averaged 36.6 million global viewers from start to finish, based on a mix of internal data and VideoAmp’s live + same-day measurement.
That figure is calculated differently from the streamer’s weekly ‘views’ metric, which divides total hours watched by runtime; hence the gap. Even so, the bout ranks as one of Netflix’s strongest live-event performances to date, comparable only to Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson, which debuted earlier this year with 46.6 million views after benefiting from an extra day of measurement.
Coming in just behind the fight was ‘Wednesday’ Season 2, which pulled in 15 million views following the drop of its second batch of episodes. The new season has now entered Netflix’s all-time most popular TV list, amassing 95 million views since release.
It currently sits in 10th place, while Season 1 still holds the crown at No. 1. With plenty of time left for viewing momentum, Season 2 is likely to climb higher, though early signs suggest it will not quite match the unprecedented numbers of the first season.
Elsewhere in the TV category, Tyler Perry’s ‘Beauty in Black’ Season 2 ranked third with 8.7 million views and ‘My Life with the Walter Boys’ Season 2 followed at No. 4 with 5.2 million.
Over on the film side, Kpop ‘Demon Hunters’ continues its astonishing run. The musical fantasy logged another 22.6 million views this week, its seventh straight week above 20 million. Regardless of that boost, the film’s sustained performance remains unlike anything Netflix has previously seen on the movie side.
Rounding out the English-language film chart: Miranda Cosgrove’s ‘The Wrong Paris’ secured second place with 12.8 million views, while ‘Unknown Number: The High School Catfish’ claimed third with 11.7 million.
Charlie Sheen’s no-holds-barred documentary aka ‘Charlie Shee’n also had a strong debut, drawing 9.7 million views during the week.
