Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior has apologised to fans for his emotional outburst after being substituted in the team’s 2-1 win over Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday.
The 25-year-old Brazilian forward was replaced by Rodrygo in the 72nd minute by coach Xabi Alonso. As he walked off, Vinícius looked frustrated and shouted in anger before heading straight to the dressing room.
His reaction drew mixed opinions. Some fans criticised his attitude, while others saw it as a sign of passion. Reports suggested tension between Alonso and Vinícius, and the two were expected to meet privately once training resumed after a two-day break.
After that meeting, Vinícius posted a message on social media to say sorry.
“Today I want to apologise to all Madrid fans for my reaction to being substituted in El Clásico,” he wrote on X. “I also apologised in person to my teammates, the club, and the president. Sometimes my passion goes too far because I always want to help the team win. My desire to compete comes from my love for this club and what it stands for. I promise to keep giving everything for Real Madrid, as I have since my first day.”
Vinícius has scored five goals and made four assists in LaLiga this season. His recent form has improved, but reports claim Alonso is not fully convinced by him. The coach has left last year’s Ballon d’Or runner-up out of the starting eleven three times this season. Contract talks have also slowed down, with his current deal running until 2027.
According to ESPN, Real Madrid has decided not to take any disciplinary action against Vinícius for his behaviour.
