Freedom fighter and president of Gono Forum Mostafa Mohsin Montu has passed away.
He breathed his last at 5:10pm on Sunday while undergoing treatment at Dhaka’s Square Hospital. He was 79 years old.
The first Namaz-e-Janaza (funeral prayer) will be held after Isha prayers at approximately 8:45pm on Sunday at Mashjid-e-Manoara mosque on Elephant Road.
A second funeral prayer is scheduled to be held at around 9:00am on Monday in Keraniganj. At 2:00pm, his body will be taken to the Central Shaheed Minar for public tribute. The final burial will take place at Banani Graveyard following a guard of honour ceremony.
He had served as the commander of Keraniganj during the 1971 Liberation War. His political career included leadership roles as chairman of Awami Jubo League and president of Dhaka District Awami League before being expelled from the party for disciplinary violations.
He later joined the Dr Kamal Hossain-led Gono Forum.
BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir extended their condolences to the bereaved family of the veteran politician.
In the 1986 parliamentary elections, Montu was elected as an MP from Dhaka-3 constituency as an AL candidate. However, in the 1991 elections, he lost the seat to BNP candidate Amanullah Aman while running again under the Awami League banner.
