The United States is seeking a framework agreement with Bangladesh that would encompass a range of issues, including its security concerns, Power and Energy Adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan said on Saturday.

“Significant progress has been made in discussions between the US and Bangladesh in recent days,” he said at a press conference held at the Secretariat by a government committee formed to enhance dynamism in business, trade, industry, ports, and revenue.

Following the initial framework talks, discussions will shift to tariff and non-tariff issues, the adviser said.

“Now the focus will be on identifying existing non-tariff barriers and determining steps needed to remove them. It is expected that these discussions will be concluded before 1 August,” he added, emphasizing that the government is taking comprehensive measures to safeguard Bangladesh’s interests.

Responding to a question about liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, Adviser Fouzul clarified that no specific talks on the matter had taken place.

“LNG and other products are already being imported from the US, including through companies like Excelerate Energy. Work is also ongoing with Chevron,” he noted.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan and Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan also attended the press conference, which was held at the Energy Division’s conference room at the Secretariat.
