Yunus Ali, Chairman of the South Bardal Union Parishad in Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj, has been arrested by police in connection with a case over an attack on student-led protesters.
Yunus Ali, a former expelled Awami League leader, hails from Saderkhola village and is the son of Abdur Rahman. He was detained on Tuesday afternoon from the Kaukandi Bazar area, adjacent to the Union Parishad office.
According to Yunus Ali’s younger brother, Jillur Rahman, police arrested him while he was on his way to Sylhet from their home, apprehending him from the local market.
Police stated that Yunus Ali was arrested in connection with a case filed over an attack on a student-public protest held on August 4, 2024. In addition, he was named as an accused in another case filed on August 26, 2024 at Sylhet’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court. That case was lodged by a resident of the Kazitula area, Mahbub Hossain, in connection with an attack and shooting at protesters near Dargah Gate in Sylhet city on July 19. A total of 86 people were named in the case.
However, Yunus Ali has denied the allegations, claiming his innocence. “I resigned from my position in the Awami League in 2022. I no longer have any ties with the party,” he stated.
Tahirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Delwar Hossain confirmed the arrest, saying Yunus Ali was taken into custody based on a specific case and will be presented before the court.
