Police have recovered the bodies of an unidentified woman and a newborn buried in sacks in Mirzapur, Tangail, six days after locals first noticed dogs dragging the remains. The identities of the deceased remain unknown, authorities said on Sunday.
According to police and local sources, residents of Jamurki Union in Mirzapur upazila noticed a foul smell near the Guntia river last Monday evening. Upon investigation, they spotted the woman’s hair and alerted police, who then dug up the ground and recovered both bodies.
Locals believe the pregnant woman was killed and buried 8-10 days ago.
Tangail Superintendent of Police Muhammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar confirmed on Sunday that an autopsy has found no evidence of rape, contrary to claims circulating on social media.
“Six days ago, a body wrapped in a sack was found on the bank of a river in Mirzapur. Police dug up the ground and recovered the body. It is suspected that the woman was strangled to death and then stuffed in a sack and buried by the perpetrators,” the SP said.
He added that samples have been preserved for DNA testing. “After that report arrives, we will take necessary steps.”
Mirzapur Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Rasel Ahmed said the woman is believed to have been about 7-8 months pregnant. The baby may have been delivered at the time of her death, after which both were buried.
The bodies were sent to Tangail Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
The SP noted that Mirzapur is an industrial area where people from various parts of the country live as workers, making identification challenging.
Photographs of the unidentified woman have been sent to all police stations across the country, he said, expressing hope that her identity will be established soon.
Authorities have also stepped up efforts to bring those involved in the murder to justice, he added.
