The United Nations has praised the interim government of Bangladesh for its measures to address cases of enforced disappearances. The UN particularly welcomed Bangladesh’s engagement with the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPAPED), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed in a press release.
It also stated that a meeting had taken place Monday between Acting Foreign Secretary Md Ruhul Alam Siddiqui and the Vice-Chairperson of the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) Grażyna Baranowska, along with member Ana Lorena Delgadillo Pérez.
During the meeting, the WGEID representatives said that they are visiting Bangladesh from June 15 to 19 to observe the ground realities and government initiatives regarding enforced disappearances.
The UN officials commended the activities and commitments of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Enforced Disappearances. They expressed interest in further assisting the government through the mandate of the UN Working Group to prevent enforced disappearances and resolve related complaints.
Md Ruhul Alam Siddiqui reaffirmed the government’s firm commitment to upholding human rights, ensuring protection, and delivering justice to victims of enforced disappearances, seeking continued UN support and technical assistance for the successful implementation of Bangladesh’s initiatives regarding the matter.
